Hermann Hesse was a German writer, popular but often politically out of step in his native country. His social criticism, and especially his focus on the individual and inner spirituality, contributed to extraordinary popularity in America in the 1960s.

Hesse was born in Calw in the Black Forest region of Germany. He became a Swiss citizen in 1923. Hesse's best known fiction includes "Knulp" (1915), "Demian" (1919), "Siddhartha" (1922), "Steppenwolf" (1927), "Narcissus and Goldmund" (1930), and "Magister Ludi (1943). Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946.
