Joseph Ernest Renan was a French author and theorist, best known for his pioneering work in comparative religion. Born in Brittany, he experienced myth and religion in his youth, became enamored of the scientific method, and earned a degree in philosophy. Archaeological expeditions to the Near East led him to treat Christianity in a new and unorthodox way, controversially suggesting that Jesus Christ and the Bible could be studied as history. Renan was deeply influential during his lifetime, and is remembered today as the founder of comparative religious studies, suggesting all religions are inherently good, and everyone should frame their beliefs as best as they can.
