Biographical Note

Poet Juan Ramón Jiménez was born in 1881 in Moguer, Spain. He published his first book of poetry in 1900 with the help of Rubén Darío, the leader of the modernista poetry movement in Spain and influential mentor of Jiménez. During the Spanish Civil War, Jiménez moved first to Cuba and then to Puerto Rico where he spent most of the rest of his life. He was the recipient of the 1956 Nobel Prize in Literature. Jiménez died in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1958.
