American pianist and teacher.

Born in 1928 in New York City, Gary Graffman studied with Isabelle Vengerova at the Curtis Institute of Music and subsequently with Vladimir Horowitz and Rudolf Serkin. In 1949, he won the Leventritt Award, and during 1950 he studied in Europe as a Fulbright Scholar. Gary and Naomi Graffman were married in 1952. During 1946-1979, Graffman performed widely in the Americas, Europe, the U.S.S.R., Australia, and Asia and recorded on the RCA and Columbia labels. Following a hand injury in 1979, Graffman limited his performances to repertoire composed for the left hand.

Graffman has taught at the Curtis Institute and the Manhattan School of Music; in 1986 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Curtis Institute.
