Henry Knox, born in Boston, Massachussets, in 1750, rose to the rank of major general in the Revolutionary War as an artillery officer and was appointed by President George Washington as the first U.S. Secretary of War in 1785. Henry Jackson, born in Boston in 1747, was a close friend of Knox and also served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, rising to the rank of brevet-brigadier general.

Henry Knox, born in Boston, Massachussets, in 1750, rose to the rank of major general in the Revolutionary War as an artillery officer and was appointed by President George Washington as the first U.S. Secretary of War in 1785. Winthrop Sargent, born in Gloucester, Massachussets, in 1753, served under Knox in the Revolutionary War and then became Secretary of the Northwest Territory under its governor, Arthur St. Clair, before being appointed the first Governor of the Mississippi Territory in 1798 by President John Adams.
