Estelle Sylvia Pankhurst, suffragette and leading international socialist, was at the forefront of the social struggles at the beginning of the twentieth century. She was actively involved with the Women's Social and Political Union and the East London Federation of Suffragettes. She played a leading role in the hunger strikes from 1913 and in the Women's Franchise League. In June 1920 Pankhurst launched the British Section of the Third International and was particularly active in anti-fascist and pacifist organizations. Later she founded and became editor of The New Times and Ethiopia News (1936-1956) and the Ethiopia Observer (1956-1960). At the outbreak of the Second World War she started the Women's War Emergency Council.
