Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), poet and philosopher, was born at Ottery St Mary, Devon, on 21 October 1772. He was educated at Christ's Hospital, 1782-1790, and attended Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1798 he published, with William Wordsworth, the Lyrical ballads, which included the famous poem 'The rime of the ancient mariner'. He published his autobiography, Biographia literaria, in 1817, and Aids to reflection in 1825. Coleridge died on 25 July 1834.
