Sir David Paton Cuthbertson was born on 9 May 1900 , son of John Cuthbertson, MBE of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. He was educated at the University of Glasgow where he graduated BSc 1921 , MB ChB 1926 , DSc 1931 and MD 1937 . He was 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1919 before completing his education. He was lecturer in Pathological Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemist, at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the University of Glasgow 1926-1934 , Grieve Lecturer in Physiological Chemistry, University of Glasgow, 1934-1945 , and Arris and Gale Lecturer at the Royal College of Surgeons 1942 . During the Second World War he was Lieutenant Colonel and Zone Medical Advisor (No 1) Glasgow Home Guard and then seconded to the Administrative Headquarters of the Medical Research Council. He was Consultant Director for the Commonwealth Bureau of Animal Nutrition 1945-1965 and Honorary Consultant in Physiology and Nutrition to the Army 1946-1965 .

Sir David Paton Cuthbertson was a member of the UK Agricultural Mission to Canada in 1950, and was on the Technical Committee for the Scottish Agricultural Improvement Council 1951-1964 and on the Advisory Committee on Pesticides and other Toxic Chemicals 1966-1971 . He was Chairman of the 9th International Congress of Animal Production 1966 and of the ARC Technical Committee on Nutrient Requirements of Livestock, 1959-1965 . He held the Presidency of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences 1960-1966 , the Nutrition Society 1962-1965 and the British Society of Animal Production 1966-1967 . He was Scientific Governor of the British Nutrition Foundation 1968-1976 . He was an honorary member of a number of organisations including the American Institute of Nutrition and the British Society of Animal Production. He was awarded the following honorary degrees: DSc Rurgers 1958, LLD Glasgow 1960, Aberdeen 1972 and Dr Honoris Causa Zagreb 1969. He was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1967, the Royal College of Pathologists in 1970, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Institute of Food Science and Technology in 1972. His publications include: (co-editor A.W. Wilkinson) Metabolism and the Response to Injury , (1976); Nutrition of Animals of Agricultural Importance, Vol. I & II , (1969); Report on Nutrition in Newfoundland , (1947). Sir David Paton Cuthbertson died on 15 April 1989 .
