D.M. Meldrum, artist, always known as Max Meldrum, was born in Edinburgh in 1875. He arrived in Melbourne in 1888, studied at the National Gallery School, and won a travelling scholarship in 1899. He returned to Melbourne in 1931, and the Archibald Prize in 1939 and 1940. He died in Melbourne in 1955.
