Julian LaRose Harris, journalist and editor, son of author Joel Chandler Harris, was born in Savannah, Georgia, 21 June 1974, and died in Atlanta, Georgia, 9 February 1963. He married Julia Florida Collier (1875-1967), an artist and writer, in 1897 and they wrote for and edited several newspapers in the South and elsewhere. Julian Harris was associated with the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION (1892-1907 and 1930-1935) and the CHATTANOOGA TIMES; he edited the UNCLE REMUS HOME MAGAZINE (1907-1912) and the Columbus, Georgia, ENQUIRER-SUN (1920-1929), for which he and his wife were awarded the Pulitzer Prize (1926) for their fight against the Ku Klux Klan; he was managing editor of the ATLANTA DAILY NEWS (1904-1905), and was also associated with the NEW YORK HERALD (1914-1919) and the NEW YORK TIMES (1942-1945). Julia C. Harris, who also did English translations of French literature, wrote LIFE AND LETTERS OF JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS (1919), and JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS, EDITOR AND ESSAYIST (1931).
