In 1957, at the invitation of British pacifist Bertrand Russell and Canadian-born, American industrialist Cyrus Eaton who made available his Nova Scotia scholarship conference center at Pugwash, a group of international scientists, representing varying political and economic opinions, met to assess the perils to humanity from weapons of mass destruction, particularly nuclear weapons. The Central Office is in London; the Executive Office is in Geneva.
