The literary and social faculty club the Stochastics was founded at the University of Chicago in 1939 by William Burrows, R.W. Harrison, Graham Du Shane, H.H. Strandskov, and Thomas Park. All were young faculty members who sought an alternative to the more established faculty clubs, "The Innominates" and the "X-Club." The club was designed as a venue for " prandial pleasures, hilarity, extraneous gossip, and a total absence of scholarship."
