English dramatist and songwriter Thomas John Dibdin was the son of songwriter Charles Dibdin and actress Mrs. Davenet. He ran away from an apprenticeship to join a company of travelling players, where he acted, worked as a scene painter, and began writing songs. He returned to London and had a great many plays produced, including comedies, operas, and farces. He was affiliated with theatres such as Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Surrey, and the Haymarket. He had a long period of popularity and prosperity, although his latter days were less successful.
