The English painter and draftsman Richard Dadd was accepted at the Royal Academy in London in 1837. In 1838 he started exhibiting regularly at the British Institute, the Society of British Artists and the Academy shows. A grave mental illness led him to Bedlam Hospital, where he spent the rest of his life, continuing to paint.
