Richard Varick (1743-1831), an American lawyer and politician, Mayor of New York City between 1789 and 1801. During the American Revolution, he served as Captain of the 1st New Regiment. Following the Battle of Saratoga, Varick was appointed inspector-general of West Point. There he became an aide to Benedict Arnold. After Arnold's defection, he and David Franks were arrested and tried by a court of inquiry. They were cleared of all charges. Varick served as George Washington's private secretary until the end of the war.
