Wilbur H. Duncan, University of Georgia Professor Emeritus of Botany and retired Curator of the GA Herbarium. Wilbur Duncan was born on October 15, 1910 in Buffalo, New York and received an A.B. (1932) and M.A. (Botany, 1933) from Indiana University. After earning a Ph.D. from Duke University under forest ecologist Clarence F. Korstian in 1938, he began his distinguished 40-year career at the University of Georgia, Department of Botany (now Department of Plant Biology) as faculty member and curator of the GA Herbarium. His work at the university was interrupted by three years of service in the United States Public Health Service (1943-1946) during World War II. He is the author of the award-winning book Wildflowers of Georgia. He died at his home attended by his family on March 25, 2005 in Athens, Georgia.
