Allen Lewis was born April 7, 1873 in Mobile, Alabama to Seth Francis and Ida L. Lewis. Lewis was educated in public schools and later studied at the Buffalo Art Students League under George Bridgman. In September 1894 Lewis began studying art at Ecole des Beaux Arts. After returning to the United States in 1902, Lewis participated in a number of International Expositions, receiving medals at the St. Louis, Panama- Pacific, and Philadelphia Sesqui-Centennial Expos. In May, 1907 Lewis married Bessie Jayne. From 1924 to 1932 Lewis taught at the Art Students League in New York. He held the position of vice-president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts from 1928-1929 and was elected an Associate to the National Academy of Design in 1929. Lewis held numerous exhibitions before his death on March 20, 1957.
