Daniel Ruggles, a native of Massachusetts and former U. S. Army officer, was a general in the Confederate Army. Ruggles led the Second Division in the Battle of Baton Rouge, 1862.

Daniel Ruggles was born in Massachusetts and was a West Point graduate in the class of 1833. In 1861 he resigned his U.S. Army commission to become Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army. He served briefly with the Army of Virginia, before given command of a division in the Army of the Mississippi, which was involved in the Battle of Shiloh.

In 1861, during the onset of the Civil War, he quit the U. S. Army and joined the Virginia Volunteers for the Confederacy as a brigadier general. He fought in several battles, including Aquia Creek, Mathias Point, and Shiloh, where he is remembered for directing the Confederate artillery barrage against the Union forces in the “hornet’s nest.”
