Born in London in 1867 he settled in Sydney in 1903. He was the original conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 1909 and in 1923 succeeded Henri Verbrugghen as Director of the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music. He was an organist, pianist, composer and conductor and published two books: The distant view (1943) and Music in Australia (1952).
