Paul Fleischman was born in Monterey, California on September 5, 1952. He is the son of children's author Sid Fleischman. Mr. Fleischman attended University of California and University of New Mexico, where he received a B.A. Degree in 1977. He won the Newbery Award in 1989 for Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices . His first attempt in 1977 at writing a quality children's book was entitled The Birthday Tree . It was published in 1979 and was successful. He writes about a variety of themes and subjects. He enjoys researching his books and uses a musical approach to language. Many of the settings for his books are in the past, but he has also written contemporary fiction. Paul Fleischman, children's author, was born in California in 1952. Albert Sidney Fleischman, his father, is an author of children's books and the younger Fleischman always considered writing books for children as a profession. In high school he developed a strong interest in classical music. Reflecting his interest in sound, his emphasis in writing books is on the lyric and rhythmic quality of the words. Among his published works are several award winners including The Half-A-Moon Inn (Golden Kite Honor Book, 1981), Graven Images: Three Stories (Newbery Honor Book, 1983) and Path of the Pale Horse (Golden Kite Honor Book, 1984).

Fleischman attended the University of California, Berkeley from 1970-72 and the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1977.
