Born in Rhode Island; son of Stephen and Eliza (Greene) Harris; through both the Harris and Greene families descended from the earliest settlers in Rhode Island; Brown class of 1838. After a twenty-year career in the commission business in New York he retired to Providence and collected books, manuscripts, and art. The Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays of the Brown University Library is named for him.
