Rear Admiral Casper Frederick Goodrich, was instrumental in the founding of the Naval War College and served as that organization's President 1897-1898. During World War I he was appointed the commander of the Naval Training Unit and the Pay Officers Material School, both established at Princeton University in 1917.

Admiral Caspar Goodrich (1847-1925) commanded various vessels in the European, North Atlantic, and Asiatic Squadrons; taught at and served as President of the Naval War College; and received the surrender of Manzanillo during the Spanish American War. He retired in 1909 but was recalled to active duty in World War I, when he served as commander of the Naval Training Unit and officer in charge of the Pay Officers Material School, Princeton Graduate College. The Naval History Society, of which he served as president from 1914-1916, published his memoirs "Rope yarns from the old navy" in 1931.
