The American Society for Educating Pious Youth for the Gospel Ministry was formerly established in Boston on August 29, 1815 with the intention of increasing the numbers of ministers within the United States. The organizers felt that the ratio of the population to the number of ordained ministers was too large and that a vast portion of the citizenry was without religious guidance and instruction. The Society provided financial support for young men who wished to join the ministry, but could not afford such an education.
