"The Screw" was published between 1847 and 1850 in Frankfort, Kentucky. The first issue was published in the neighboring city of Louisville. Two of the editors of the newspaper were Samuel I.M. Major and John Monroe. The publication was semi-controversial because of the political content. In another newspaper, Major and Monroe printed an editorial about "The Screw" after publication ceased. In the statement the men, "avow ourselves as a part of the editors of the late anonymous paper called "The Screw", and disavow any intention to injure or insult anyone.
