Author Richard Bagot was born into an old and wealthy English family. He was privately educated, and spent time in Australia as secretary to the Governor. He also spent time in Italy, and many of his books have Italian subjects or themes. Although he was a Roman Catholic, he was critical of the Vatican and explored anti-Catholic positions in his works. He wrote biographies, novels, essays, and travel books.
