Ernö Balogh was born in 1897 in Budapest, Hungary. He attended the National Hungarian Royal Academy of Music, 1905-1917, where he studied piano with Béla Bartók and composition with Zoltán Kodály. From 1920 to 1923, he studied piano with Leonid Kreutzer in Berlin, and in 1923 he toured Scandinavia as accompanist to Fritz Kreisler. Balogh moved to New York City in 1924, and from 1924 to 1960 he appeared as soloist, recitalist, and accompanist and made recordings. Balogh maintained friendships with Bartók and Kodály and in 1927 assisted in bringing Bartók to the United States for concert touring. In 1936, Balogh married Malvina Schweitzer, Professor of Biochemistry at New York University; in 1960, they moved to Washington, D.C. Balogh taught at the Peabody Conservatory and wrote on piano pedagogy, opera, performance practice, and Bartók. Balogh died in 1989.
