Australian artists and journalist, David Henry Souter was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in March 1862. He studied art and later journalism when he moved to Natal in 1881. Souter married Jessie Swanson and in 1886 they moved ot Australia, eventually settling in Sydney in 1887 where Souter worked as an illustrator, contributing cartoons to the Tribune. In 1892 he began drawing for the Bulletin, submitting drawings to them for over 35 years. He was on the council of the Society of Artists when it was established in Sydney in 1895 and was art editor for Art and Architecture from 1904 to 1911. He also illustrated many school books published by William Brooks and Company. Souter died in Sydney on 22 September 1935. He was survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
