Wolfgang Abendroth was born in Elberfeld (Wuppertal) in 1906; studies law 1924-1930; joined the Communist Youth Movement (KJV) in 1920, then the Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (KPD). He participated in clandestine anti-Nazi activities 1933-1937; was forced to serve in the 'Strafdivision 999' in Greece, deserted in 1944; prisoner of war 1944-1946; joined the Sozialdemokratisch Partei Deutschlands (SPD) in London in 1946; from 1951 to his retirement in 1972 professor of political sciences at Marburg University and member of various learned societies. He died in Frankfurt am Main 1985.
