Colonel John Barnwell was commissioned by South Carolina Governor Francis Nicholson to establish the first of several forts envisioned along the southwest border of English lands in North America, in a step against French and Spanish encroachment. The first fort, Fort King George, was located by Barnwell on a high bluff three miles inland on the Altamaha River in what is now Georgia.
