Mary Q. Steele was born May 8, 1922, in Chattanooga, Tenn. She married the author William O. Steele, and published her fist book under the pseudonym Wilson Gage in 1958. Throughout her long and prolific career, she wrote both picture books for young children and more complex stories for older readers. In 1970, she received a Newbery citation for Journey Outside, a story critics lauded as a fantasy-adventure story as well as an allegory, and called it fascinating on several levels. Many of Steele's books reflect her interest in natural history and bird watching. She has also been praised for her skill at creating realistic and respectable characters. Mary Q. Steele died June 30, 1992.
