S.V. Ciriacy-Wantrup was a professor of agricultural economics at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1938 to 1973. Born in Langenberg, Germany, he was educated at the Universities of Berlin, Vienna, Bonn, and the University of Illinois. After immigrating to the United States in the 1930s he worked briefly for the Rockefeller Foundation. In 1938 he began his long career with the Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics and with UC Berkeley. He also served as a research marine economist with the University of California's Institute of Marine Resources. He is best known for his book Resource Conservation, published originally in 1952.
