Frederick J. H. Merrill, geologist, was born in New York City in 1861. He graduated from Columbia School of Mines with a Bachelor's degree in 1885 and a Ph.D. in 1890. From 1885 to 1890 he worked for the New Jersey Geological Survey. In 1894, Merrill became director of the New York State Museum and in 1898 he became New York State Geologist. He left the New York State Museum in 1904 to become a consulting mining geologist in Los Angeles.
