Douglas Southall Freeman was an author, historian, and editor.

He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, May 16, 1886. He received the Ph. D. in history from The Johns Hopkins University in 1908. He was an editorial writer for the "Richmond Times-Dispatch," 1909-10, 1913-15; editor, the "Richmond News Leader," 1915-1949. He was the author of a 4-volume biography of Robert E. Lee for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1934. He completed 5 volumes of a projected 8-volume biography of George Washington before his death in 1953.
