Archibald Campbell (1605/7-1661), marquis of Argyll, was involved in the national covenant, became a leader of the covenanting armies, negotiated the peace of Berwick with Charles I, crowned Charles II at Scone but eventually submitted to Cromwell, refused to join in with a royalist rebellion involving his son in 1653, and supplied information to the English side; his great unpopularity ensured that after the Restoration, no-one would save him from execution in 1661.
