Henry Scholberg, B.A. (1943) University of Illinois, B.S. (1954), M.A. (1962) University of Minnesota. First librarian of the Ames Library of South Asia at the University of Minnesota. Henry Scholberg was born on May 29, 1921 in Darjeeling, India, where his parents were missionaries. He earned his B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1943 and his M.A. in library science from the University of Minnesota in 1962. During World War II, Scholberg, a conscientious objector, participated in the voluntary starvation study conducted by Ancel Keys at the University of Minnesota's Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene. In 1961, Scholberg was appointed as instructor and librarian of the newly created Ames Library of South Asia. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1966, associate professor in 1974 and professor in the 1980s. Scholberg was a well known scholar and author of bibliographies and works on India. He retired as professor emeritus.

Henry Scholberg, who spent the greater part of his career in the academic sphere of South Asia, was moved to investigate a curiosity: the numerous French names which dot the map of Scandinavian Minnesota: Duluth, Le Sueur, Faribault, Lac Qui Parle, Gentilly, Voyageur State Park. The French Pioneers of Minnesota is the result of his efforts to satisfy his curiosity. Scholberg was formerly (from 1961 to 1986) director of the Ames Library of South Asia at the University of Minnesota. His publications include: The District Gazetteers of British India: a Bibliography, Bibliographie des Francais dans l'Inde, Bibliography of Goa and the Portuguese in India, the Encyclopedias of India, the Indian Literature of the great Rebellion. Scholberg was born in India of Methodist Missionary parents. He graduated from Woodstock High School, Mussoorie, U.P., India, and has bachelor degrees from the Universities of Illinois and Minnesota and an M.A. in Library Science from the U of M. Librarian, Ames Library of South Asia (1961-1986), Instructor (1961-1966), Assistant Professor (1966-1974), Associate Professor (1974-1979), and Professor (1979-1986), University of Minnesota.

Henry Scholberg was born May 29, 1921 in Darjeeling, India. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in History (1943), and from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Social Sciences (1954) and an M.A. in Library Science (1962).

Professor Scholberg first came to the University of Minnesota in 1944 as a participant in the Minnesota Experiment in Human Starvation conducted by the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene. And after serving as a librarian and an athletic coach at Columbia Heights High School in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, he returned to the University in 1961 as a librarian and the first director of the Ames Library of South Asia. The library had recently been donated to the University of Minnesota Libraries by its founder, Charles Lesley Ames. Professor Scholberg was promoted from instructor to assistant professor and associate professor and then full professor in 1979. He held the position of Director of the Ames Library until his retirement in 1986 as professor emeritus.

During Professor Scholberg’s 25-year tenure at the Ames Library, the collection grew from 25,000 to over 105,000 volumes, maps, newspapers, microfilm, and microfiche covering the social sciences and humanities of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Professor Scholberg was a noted author of bibliographies, articles, reviews, and papers on India.

Henry Scholberg died August 4, 2012 in New Brighton, Minnesota.
