Gilbert Haven, Methodist bishop, author, and abolitionist, was born in Malden, Massachusetts, September 19, 1821; he died there on January 3, 1880. He entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church, N.E. Conference (1851), was elected to the episcopacy, and moved to Atlanta, Georgia (1872). He was an advocate of civil rights and was the author of six books and editor of many pamphlets and articles.
