Lemuel Shattuck (1793-1859), American author, statistician and public health reformer. Shattuck settled in Concord, Mass. in 1822. In 1826, he took over the editorial department of the Yeoman's Gazette, and in 1829 became the recording secretary of the Middlesex County Lyceum. In 1834, Shattuch moved to Cambridge and a year later to Boston, Mass. where he became a bookseller, publisher, public health writer and statistician. In 1837, he was elected to the Boston City Council. Shattuck was a founder of the American Statistical Association (1839) and the New England Historic Genealogical Society. He was the author of A History of the Town of Concord (1835), Census of Boston for the Year 1845 (1846), and other works on statistics, public health, and local history.

Born in Ashby, N. H., Oct. 15, 1793, moved with parents to New Ipswich in infancy. Removed to Troy, Dec., 1817, to become a school teacher and to Detroit in 1818 where he taught until 1821 when he returned East. From 1822-1833 was enraged in mercantile business in Concord, Mass., and from 1834-59 in book business in Boston where he remained until his death. His other interests were history and mathematics. He married Clarissa Baxter of Boston. They had five daughters. He died in 1859. (from Appleton) (blue index cards)

Statistician; genealogist; public servant in Concord and Boston, Mass.; bookseller/publisher; historian of Concord. Born Oct. 15, 1793, in Ashby, Mass.; died Jan. 17, 1859, in Boston. Entered business partnership with brother Daniel in Concord, 1823. As member of Concord's School Committee, reorganized schools and introduced preparation of annual reports. In 1830, prepared Concord's first annual school report, which ultimately led to passage (1838) of state legislation requiring such reports.
