John Shebbeare was an English writer, known primarily for his vitriolic novels satirizing contemporary England. He apprenticed to a surgeon, became an apothecary, then moved to Paris; after his return to England, he claimed a degree in medicine. His politically charged writings began to appear soon after, typically consisting of contrived, derivative plots espousing strong morals and deriding various English laws and personalities. His works are vivid reminders of the political climate of his day, but are generally disliked by critics.
