Richards was the first chemist in the United States to be awarded the Nobel Prize (1914). He studied chemistry at Harvard University, where he was appointed a lecturer in chemistry in 1889. In 1895 Harvard sent Richards to Germany to strengthen his credentials in the area of physical chemistry. In Leipzig, he attended lectures by Ostwald Wilhelm and Max Julius Louis Leblanc, notes for which are contained in this notebook. In Göttingen he studied with Walther Nernst. It has been suggested the work Richards did in Germany had a great influence on the theory of the compressible atom he eventually formulated.
