John William Gardner (1912-2002) was vice president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York from 1949 to 1955, and president of the Carnegie Corporation from 1955 to 1965. He was a member of President Kennedy's Task Force on Education in 1960, on President Johnson's Task Force on Education in 1964, and he served as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare from 1965 to 1968.

John Gardner earned his B.A. and M.A. in Psychology from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. Gardner served as the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare under President Lyndon Johnson from 1965-1968. He founded the citizen's advocacy group Common Cause and was the chairman of the Commission on White House Fellowships. Gardner served on the Stanford University Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1982. He was a founding member of the national advisory board of the Haas Center for Public Service and remained active with the center. In 1989, Gardner was named the first Miriam and Peter Haas Centennial Professor in Public Service. He was a consulting professor in the School of Education at the time of his death in 2002.
