Biographical Note

• 1836, Sept. 14: Born near Knoxville, Tenn.
• 1858: Principal, Hamilton Male Academy, Harrison, Tenn., following graduation from Strawberry Plains College in East Tennessee Married Judith Ann Potts (died 1897)
• 1861: Moved to Georgia and was admitted to the bar
• 1862 - 1865 : Edited Columbus Daily Sun
• 1870 - 1872 : Edited Atlanta New Era
• 1873 - 1876 : U.S. minister to Columbia
• 1878 - 1882 : U.S. consul at Chin-Kiang, and then at Canton, China
• 1882 - 1885 : U.S. minister to Columbia
• 1889 - 1892 : U.S. minister to Venezuela
• 1894: Appointed legal adviser and special agent of Venezuelan government, particularly with respect to the boundary dispute with Great Britain
• 1898: Published Brief concerning the Question of Boundary between Venezuela and British Guiana
• 1912, July 18: Died, Atlanta, Ga.
