  • 1836, Sept. 14: Born near Knoxville, Tenn.
  • 1858: Principal, Hamilton Male Academy, Harrison, Tenn., following graduation from Strawberry Plains College in East Tennessee Married Judith Ann Potts (died 1897)
  • 1861: Moved to Georgia and was admitted to the bar

  • 1873 - 1876 : U.S. minister to Columbia
