Richard Cromwell was the Lord Protector of England and eldest surviving son of Oliver Cromwell; the recipient is addressed as "Madam" and "Dear Heart," and is probably Cromwell's wife. The recipient was formerly identified as his mother Elizabeth Cromwell, but she died in 1665.
