Chicago author, anthologist and lecturer.

A life-long Chicago resident and son of hotel owner John A. Rice, Wallace Rice was educated at Racine College and Harvard, and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1884. Having little interest in the law, Rice soon began his literary career as a drama critic and a book critic for Chicago newspapers. He also wrote or edited more than ninety books and pamphlets, including pageants for historical occasions, plays and masques, hymns, song lyrics, and histories (Chicago Stock Exchange, People's Gas Light and Coke Co., Palmer House), and designed the Chicago Municipal flag (adopted 1917) and the Illinois Centennial flag. Rice was also very involved in theatrical and club activities (Cliff Dwellers, Society of Midland Authors, Stage Guild, Playwrights Theater and several other Chicago societies).

From the description of Wallace Rice papers, 1779-1939, (bulk 1885-1935). (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 55025418
