Social scientists. Frederick (Fred) Edmund Emery was born in Western Australia in 1925. Emery was a lecturer in psychology at Melbourne University from 1948-1956, and senior social scientist at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in London, 1958-1967. In 1969 he became senior research fellow in sociology at the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University and in 1974 senior research fellow at the Centre for Continuing Education, ANU. He left the Australian National University in 1979 and became Professor of Social Systems Science at the University of Pennsylvania in 1982-1984. Emery and his wife Dr Merrelyn Emery, who collaborated with him on many projects, gained international recognition for their work as management theorists. Fred Emery subsequently worked as an independent researcher in Canberra. He died in 1997.
