In 1940 Golo Mann made the journey together with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, and Heinrich and Nelly Mann, from Vichy France to Spain, then to Portugal and, finally, to the U.S., under the guidance of Varian Fry. In her memoir Alma Mahler refers to her and Franz's friendship with Mann as dating from that time.
