Marsh, George P. (George Perkins), 1801-1882
Variant namesGeorge Perkins Marsh was born in Woodstock, Vermont, educated at Dartmouth, and taught Greek and Latin in a local academy, then studied and practiced law. He was elected to the Vermont legislature, then to Congress in 1843, where he actively supported the Library of Congress and the establishment of the Smithsonian Institution. He was appointed Minister to Italy, 1861-1862. He was an active lecturer, and his book Man and Nature (1864) earns him credit today as the first environmentalist.
