Hide Profile

Edward Beecher was born on August 27, 1803 at East Hampton, Long Island, New York, the second son of Lyman Beecher. Charles, his brother and writer of his biography, was born in 1815. The brothers and their nine other siblings were brought up in a religious household. Edward thoroughly believed in the pre-existence of the soul, which was viewed as heresy by some. Charles also believed in this doctrine and, therefore, felt that he was the only one of the siblings who could do justice to his brother's biography. Edward was an educator and anti-slavery leader. Charles was a clergyman and an anti-slavery activist. Edward died on July 28, 1895 at age 92, and Charles died in 1900 at age 85.
