Paul R. Porter was born on January 12, 1908 in Drexel, Missouri. He received an A.B. from the University of Kansas in 1928. From 1935 to 1939 he was an editor for the Kenosha Labor, a labor newspaper in Wisconsin, and from 1939 to 1941 he was General Manager of the Union Cooperative Publishing Co. He married Hilda Roberts on September 26, 1940. He went on to serve the government in the following capacities: Chairman, Shipbuilding Stabilization Committee, War Production Board, 1941-1945; Adviser on Labor Affairs, Allied Control Commission, Germany, 1945; Deputy Chief and later Chief, Mission for Economic Affairs, U.S. Embassy, London, 1945-1947; Chief U.S. Delegate, Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, 1947-1949; Chief, Economic Cooperation Administration Mission to Greece, 1949-1950; Assistant Administrator, Economic Cooperation Administration, 1950-1951; U.S. Special Representative in Europe for the Marshall Plan, 1951; and Deputy U.S. Special Representative in Europe, Mutual Security Agency, 1952-1953. Porter left government service and served as director of Porter International Company, 1953 to 1967. From 1966 to 1967 he also served as Chairman of the Board of Porter International Company. In 1976 he wrote The Recovery of American Cities. Paul R. Porter died in Sarasota, Florida on April 21, 2002.

Harrison Paul Porter was born July 29, 1921, in Houston, Texas, the second of the four children of Constance Eve Ingalls Porter and Harry Ray Porter. His father, also known as Harrison Paul Porter, was Katherine Anne Porter's brother. Mr. Porter's siblings were Dorothy Rae, Constance Elita, and Charles Boone. He was the nephew and later legal guardian of Katherine Anne Porter.
