Douglas Volk (b. 1856, Pittsfield, MA) was a noted American portrait and landscape painter, and the son of sculptor Leonard Volk (1828-1895). He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Jean-Leone Gerome in Paris (ca1873-1875) and later taught at New York's Cooper Institute (1879-1884). In 1886 he became the first president of the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. In 1904 Volk and wife Marion--a painter and textile artist--moved to Center Lovell, Maine where they established the Sabatos Handicraft Society and hosted an artist colony at their "Hewnoaks" estate. Douglas Volk received various commissions for public art (including one for the Polk County courthouse in Des Moines, Iowa), and is well-known for his series of portraits of Abraham Lincoln, who his father met in 1860 while working on a life mask of the president.
