Susan Ferrier wrote three popular novels, a memoir, and an impressive body of correspondence, all noted for their wit and inventiveness. Aided by the popularity of Sir Walter Scott's Waverly novels, the Scottish manners and sharp satire of her novels proved very marketable, and they were translated into French and adapted for the stage. Although still admired for their satire, the pious elements in her novels have not found favor with a modern audience.
